Don't Be Afraid to Fail.  Be afraid NOT to try.

React to this quote.  What does it mean to you?

  1. It is human nature to be afraid of things. This instinct is what keeps us alive. This quote, however, makes a great point. I believe the message that this quote is trying to get across is that it is better to try, even if you are afraid. It is also saying that we should be fearing missing opportunities to experience new things. Experiences are what make up a person. If you are always afraid to experience something new, you will not have fun in your life. You will not get the chance to experience new things and live you life to the fullest. This quote is a great quote to keep in your head. The fear of missing out on something should outshine your fear to do something. You should not hesitate, but you should be outgoing and try new things.

This quote is very relatable to me. For example, last June I went to an amusement park. At this amusement park, there was a ride that brought you up high and quickly brought you down. I was terrified to go on this ride. The fear of missing on the experience, though, trumped over my fear to go on this ride. It ended up being really fun and if I were to have not gone on that ride, I would most likely look back at that experience and regret not trying something new. To me, this quote is saying that you should not be afraid of something, but you should be afraid of missing out on something.

Another experience that I can connect to this quote occurred about two year ago when I was in fifth grade. I was in band at the time. For the winter concert, my teacher asked about five fifth graders if one of us wanted a solo. There was a moment of awkward silence as nobody raised their hands. I was having a battle in my head about whether I should do the solo or not. I was thinking about all the things that could go wrong if I were to accept the solo. I was overall afraid to do the solo. I, however, ended up raising my hand. I was more scared to not try than I was to play on stage alone. It all went well and I do not regret trying something new.

This quote teaches a great lesson; It is better to try and fail than to not try at all. I am very reluctant about many things, so I should remember this quote whenever I am in a situation in which I do not know whether or not to do something. You do not want to be tied down to a boring life of no fun. If you are afraid of everything, you will never attempt to do something new. Do not let your fears get the best of you. You should always try, even if you are terrified of what you are attempting to do. That is better than just sitting around waiting for something you are not scared of. Fear is nothing but a mere rope that keeps us from excitement. As Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself”. The overall message that this quote gives me is simple; try.

  2. Failure can be a devastating and mortifying experience almost all the time. However, whether you succeed or fail at something isn't the most important part. There are several of things more important than the end result of something you have attempted to do. No matter what the occurrence may be, the thing that matters most is the fact that you tried. I think the meaning behind this quote is that no matter what you are afraid of, you shouldn’t decline an opportunity to try something completely new to you. The more opportunities you miss out on because of your fears of failing, the more wonderful parts of life you are missing out on. The point is, you can’t just try something out for the first time and then master it instantly. Becoming better at something will take time and a lot of practice. And without a doubt, you will experience many failures along the way. But if you just stay where you are while thinking “I don’t want to do this, I’ll definitely fail and I don’t want to,” then you’re not going to make any progress at all. If you don’t try, then you won’t fail, but you won’t succeed either.

This quote means a lot to me. For the most part of my life, I never really cared about or even considered trying out new things; and I’m still like this often. I just did whatever I had no choice but to do. Whenever I would be given an opportunity to try something new and make my life more interesting, I would turn it down because I was afraid that I wouldn’t be good enough for it and/or that I’d perform the worst out of everyone else. Looking back at it now, I regret doing that all the time. For example, in fourth grade, my teacher asked me if I wanted her to recommend me for Gifted & Talented. To me back then, it sounded like it would be challenging; maybe way too challenging. So then I refused out of worry and fear of failing, and I let that chance slip by me. Then I got asked again in sixth grade, so I just decided to try it out for a change. After getting through my first class, I realized it wasn’t bad at all. Now that I’ve felt what a Gifted & Talented class feels like, I feel kind of idiotic for rejecting the opportunity the first time I received it. Even now, I usually have a few short and negative moments where I just think to myself that I’m probably the least intelligent person in this class, but I just shrug it off and accept it. In the end, I’m just glad that I decided to try it out, because if I hadn’t, then I wouldn’t experience anything new at all.

But overall, I’m just relieved that the opportunity came back to me. I can easily compare my life today to my life in the past, and I can see that trying out G&T actually made my life more interesting and I got to try out something new. Perhaps I was just lucky. In the future, this will probably never happen again, though. If I were to decline a huge offer just because I was afraid of failing or being the worst at it, then it probably wouldn’t come back at all, and I’d end up missing out on great moments of life. My experience with turning down a G&T opportunity and then trying it out a few years later has helped me get a grasp on this quote’s meaning, since now I can see how trying something new can affect my life, even if I have made so many awkward mistakes in the process. Before I ever read this quote, I never really thought about my life in this way, so reading this quote introduced me to a whole new way of thinking. To sum it all up, this quote is trying to say that we shouldn’t be afraid of failing miserably at something, but we should be afraid of sticking to a boring and uninteresting life with no thrilling experiences at all.

  3. Let's be honest - no one wants to fail. I haven't met anyone who said it was okay to fail in anything. We are all afraid of failure. We should be more afraid of something else - not attempting something.
If you don't attempt something, how will you know the outcome of trying? You will never know what would happen if you didn't try. If you fail but you tried your best, so what? Move on and try harder next time! Have the satisfaction that you tried your best. You shouldn't feel down in the dumps after you failed something. Feel confident because now you know where you went wrong and you can fix your mistakes. There is always a tomorrow!
Think about all of your greatest achievements. It could be something like getting a good score on the PARCC or learning to play a song on the piano. Can you imagine what would happen if you didn't try your best when doing those things? For example, if you didn't try to get a good score on the PARCC, you would fail the most important test that you had to take that year. This would affect the way people look at you. If you DID try to do well on the PARCC test and you succeeded, then you can proudly say that “Hey, I did well, and I tried my best!”
If you don't try anything, you won't experience many things. You won’t be able to relate to others or tell them your take on the situation. It might result in feeling left out. For example, if you didn't try going on a roller coaster, you are simply missing out on that. A lot of people enjoy roller coasters and if you haven’t gone on a roller coaster, you can’t share your experience with others. If your friends are talking about going on roller coasters and their opinions of them, you might feel left out if you haven’t rode on one. If you did attempt to ride on a roller coaster, you can share your experience and how you felt about it. You won’t feel totally clueless and sort of fit in the conversation.
When I was younger, I had an interest in playing the piano, but I was afraid I was going to be horrible at playing it. I didn’t want to waste my parents’ money on a piano if I wasn’t going to be amazing at it. I was one of the biggest decisions I had made - and I was 5 years old when I made the choice. I talked to my parents and they said that money wasn’t a problem for them and that they only cared if I was interested in it. They told me that I should at least try playing the piano. I took their advice and it was one of the best decisions I had ever made in my entire lifetime. I absolutely love playing the piano. I love the feeling of my hands running across the keyboard as it creates a melodic sound. I have also become pretty good at it. A few years down the road when I was 8, I decided that I would also play the flute. After a lot of hard work, I became really good at both instruments. I was so glad that I made the decision at the age of five to play the piano. Even though I was afraid of failure, I tried my best and learned how to play both instruments.
That is why you should attempt things and not be afraid of failure. You have a chance of succeeding if you try your best. I have learned to at least attempt things and I think it is better than not doing anything at all. So try your best and find out for yourself which is better.

  4. Everybody fails at things in their life whether it be a test or even something as simple as a game of tic-tac toe. We all need to take risks in life in order to have a successful outcome. The quote,"Don't Be Afraid to Fail. Be afraid NOT to try." Means a lot more than it says. It represents that you won't get anywhere in life if you don't take a risk. When people don't take risks and go the safe way in life all the time, first of all they might not have a successful or as successful outcome. Secondly, it is quite boring and not very fun at all however some people don't like change and like the same things over and over again.
To begin, I would like to say that as a 12 year old boy I enjoy trying new things, except for pineapple pizza, but for example whenever I see a new food item at Burger King or McDonald’s I really feel as if I have to try it. However, sometimes if I make the wrong choice due to impatience I feel that at least I made the choice to do something rather than nothing. People should always try because trying is a step to being the best you can be and if you fail you just need to get up and try again.
For example, I remember when I had a choice of whether to go ziplining or not and at the time I wasn’t afraid of heights however the distance from my feet to the floor was not very comforting. As I walked up to the stand where it began I just had to think to myself that this is a very rare chance for me to do this so I went to the top and went ziplining. If I hadn’t done that I probably would still be somewhat afraid of heights and who knows how different my life would be. I took a risk and in the end it worked out pretty well for me.
This quote can teach all the people who travel the safe road that a little bit of change can’t hurt you very badly. Maybe instead of saying no to things such as a golfing range or bowling just go once and try it. If you have fun then you’ll go again and if not don’t but you won’t realize what you are missing out on until you try. This quote also taught me that having a little spice in your life is good and that failure is the only way that people learn their weaknesses and strengths.
All in all, when I have 2 choices to make I take the riskier one because it is just in my nature and I believe in learning from mistakes. Some people don’t take risks but they won’t know what they are missing out on until they try. Trying is the only way you learn and failing is the only way you succeed.

  5. Do you know anyone who failed and was happy about it? Exactly. No one wants to fail, but we all fail at some point in our lives. That’s what makes us human. I think that this quote, “Don’t be afraid to fail. Be afraid NOT to try.”, has made a very good point. It’s not the outcome that matters, but the mindset after knowing the result is what that counts. In other words, it doesn’t matter whether you succeed or fail, but you should still not give up. You should keep on trying. If you fail, relax. It is not the end of the world. You can always try again to succeed. Succeeding and failing is a part of life and we can’t change that but we can increase our chances of succeeding. It also matters how much we try. If you tried your best, you should be proud of that accomplishment.
This quote is relatable to the experiences that I had. When I came to the United States from India, I had come in April, so it a little too late to start school that year, so I was tutored by my mom and dad at home. Being taught all the things I was supposed to learn in 1 school year was being taught to me at home in just a couple of months. I had to practice many things and it took me a long time to catch up. I convinced my dad that I was ready and that I should take a test. The results that had came weren’t so good. I had felt frustrated and I had lost hope knowing that my parents would be very disappointed. I didn’t want to learn anything because I believed that I would fail every time. My dad told me that it was okay to fail and that I shouldn’t give up. I can always try again. He turned out to be right. I was patient and I made sure I knew everything. By the time I took the next test, I had succeeded. If I hadn’t tried, I would be behind all the others in my grade.
You shouldn’t be disappointed in failure. I know it can be frustrating, but failure gives you another chance to try and succeed. Whether you try your best or not at all is what matters. Even if you didn’t exactly fail, but you didn’t succeed either, you should still challenge yourself to reach your full potential. Let’s suppose you fail and you don’t want to try because you think you’ll just fail again. Well, you don’t know what the outcome will be when you try again. Sometimes, you just need a good attitude. In other words, be confident! I learned that it doesn’t matter whether you succeed or fail. It matters if you did your best and if you reached your fullest potential. Don’t be upset because you failed. Instead, be proud that you tried your best. In conclusion, I believe that remembering this quote will make us keep on trying.
