December is a very special month. It's a time for sharing the warmth of family and friendship. What was the best gift that you ever gave or received. Why? This gift DOES NOT have to be a material item...
I think the best gift I have ever given to someone is simply a gift card. Although it doesn’t really sound that much of a gift, I could tell my friend was overjoyed when I gave it to her. She also told me how excited she was about my gift, and I felt relieved and also happy myself. She told me that her family didn’t celebrate Christmas or any holidays in December, so she barely received any gifts her entire life. The only other gift she had gotten was a piece of candy that one of her other friends gave to her last year, but she didn’t really like it that much. I was surprised that an item of small value could actually fill someone with delight; nonetheless, I was glad that I could add some positivity into someone’s life with a small gift.
December is my favorite month – not only because it is my birthday month, but it’s also the time of giving. As much as I love receiving presents, giving them gives me more satisfaction. I don’t like giving store-bought presents for two reasons. They don’t seem as heartfelt has a gift that you made yourself. They also require money and I don’t have too much of money. Even though I don’t like giving these items, sometimes it is necessary to give these types of gifts. The best gift I’ve ever given was money and items to charity. In church, every December, there is always an event where there are paper ornaments with a short Christmas list consisting of 1 to 3 items hung on a Christmas tree. These lists are from children in Africa who don’t get presents because of their family’s situation. These people aren’t as fortunate as some of us. Some people get tablets, phones, PlayStations, and so many other expensive presents and take it for granted. The children ask for less expensive presents and I know that they are overjoyed to even receive something as simple as a book. Some of them ask for necessities like toothpaste and socks which some of us don’t even thank our parents for. Think about it – Have you ever walked up to your parents and said “Thank you for the toothpaste”? These children are very appreciative of whatever they get. This year my mother let me pick the list of presents off of the tree. People had swarmed the tree to pick up a paper ornament with a list of gifts on them so my mom told me to wait until the crowd leaves. I knew that this meant that all the cheapest presents would be taken and all the slightly more expensive presents were left on the tree. When I walked up to the tree, I saw so many lists that had gift cards and I thought that that wasn’t something that this person needed too much. That was when I found an ornament that said that there was an eight-year-old girl who wanted a pair of sneakers. I felt like this person was responsible because she was only eight and yet she asked for something that she needed instead of something that was expensive and unreasonable like a video game. When I went to the store with my parents to buy the shoes, I looked for good quality shoes because this girl really deserved that. I kept in mind what an eight-year-old girl liked and picked out a pair of light blue running sneakers that had a cushion inside the shoe so the shoe is comfortable. I bought those shoes and when I got home, I put them neatly in a Christmas gift bag that said “Merry Christmas”. When we went to church, I kept the present under the tree and thought, “I hope this wonderful girl loves this present.” This whole experience made me feel like I made an impact on the world. I may have only given one pair of shoes but that probably had a big impact on the person receiving the present. I felt like I made a difference and helped someone out. Most people wouldn’t go out of their way and buy a gift for someone they didn’t know, but I am proud to say that I did. Giving is much better than receiving and I am so happy that I chose to participate in this event.
December is a time of fun and joy. A time when families come together and share unforgettable moments. While I don't celebrate any holiday in December, it's always nice to see people coming together. This December, though, I was able to give back to some of the people that I respect most; police officers. They give to the community so much and just a couple weeks ago, I was able to give back to them. My Civics class made "survival kits" for the police officers. They were really just goody bags full of candy. Each had a pun that showed them how much we appreciated them. For example, we added gum to remind them to stick together. We also added lifesavers to remind them of all the times they've been one. We also drew designs on the bags to make them more personilized and to give them more meaning than just a bag of candy. What made this more special was the fact that I had the oppurtunity to present the officers with our creations in person. I went after school one day I was able to meet the police team in person and gave them our "survival kits". It was a Great feeling when I got to give them something they probably didn't receive everday. So even though these goody bags weren't worth a lot and weren't valuable money wise, it was very valuable to me emotionally and it meant a lot to me that I was able to give anything at all to those people who help me and countless others everyday. I really appreciate those who take on the profession that help others and showing that is the greatest gift I could ever give.
December is a month of very special times to spend with your family. It is also a time for giving. For a gift to be special, it doesn’t need to be a material item. It could also be something in your mind. The best gift I had ever received from my family was their support. My parents and my younger brother have always been there for me to support me in every way they possibly could. Their support would always be with me and there would never be a time where they didn’t help me out. Sometimes, they wouldn’t think twice to help me. What I mean is that they would say yes, even if they were busy. They would help me out of my darkest times and into a happy state. When I would study for my first PARCC test, I would always get really frustrated in some situations where I would just give up easily. I would refuse to take the test because I was afraid I’d get a bad score and get yelled at. My parents would encourage me to not give up and keep on trying. I can’t imagine not having my parent’s support there for me. Without their support, I would never have the courage to get up again. Surprisingly, there would be some times where even my brother gave some support. Whenever I would have a project and I wouldn’t have any ideas, the support from my brother would be like a head start. With my parents and my brother by my side, I can always count on them to help me out. I consider the support from my family the most precious present I have been gifted.
